Pee Dee Electric Cooperative employees showed their love for community this Valentine’s day by packing over 600 food bags for Help4Kids. Twenty one PDEC employees went the evening before Valentine’s Day to deliver food donations and form an assembly line to pack the bags. Help4Kids provides more than 2,400 bags of food every weekend to hungry elementary students in all five Florence County school districts. The bags are filled with nutritious, child-friendly, self-serve food designed to put in a backpack and feed a child over the weekend. Their goal is for children to return to school on Monday rested, fed, and ready to learn. Help4Kids volunteer, Paula Turner explained, “Hunger doesn’t take the weekend off.” Research shows that hungry children have poorer mental and overall health, miss more days of school, suffer greater rates of behavioral disorders and are less prepared to learn. One of PDEC’s seven principles is community commitment and employees have started a voluntary community service program this year.
